NRA Certified Classes Available
Several NRA classes are available to TCRGC members and non-members and are taught by NRA Certified Instructors. If you are genuinely interested in taking one or more of these classes, please use the online Class Signup Form above, or you may sign up at the club during regular range hours.
1. Michigan CCW (NRA’s - Personal Protection in the Home)
This is an eight (8) hour course that generally takes 9-10 hours and maybe split over 2 days on some occasions. This course meets the legal requirements of Michigan Public Act 719 (2002). It includes a minimum one hour from an qualified attorney or law enforcement officer on the legal aspects of CCW and required shooting range time with your handgun and about 100 rounds of your ammunition. You will receive a 200 page NRA book and must pass both written and shooting tests prior to receiving a certificate of completion that is needed in order to apply for a Michigan Concealed Pistol License. The cost to TCRGC members is $115.
2. NRA’s “Basic Pistol”
This is a ten (10) hour course oriented to new or very novice handgun shooters. It covers: safe handling, firearm parts and functioning, ammunition, shooting techniques, hands-on shooting with the instructor’s or your firearms, cleaning, and shooting opportunities. A certificate is awarded after successful written test completion. This course is an acceptable pre-requisite to the CCW course. Cost has not been determined but will be the range of $100 for TCRGC members.
3. NRA’s “First Steps Pistol Orientation”
This is a three (3) hour mini-version of the Basic Pistol course above and is also oriented toward pending and new handgun owners. It is also meets the CCW course pre-reqs. The cost will be $35 for TCRGC members.
4. NRA’s “Basic Metallic Cartridge Reloading”
This is an eight (8) hour course that will be split over three separate days of about three hours each. It includes both rifle and handgun cartridges and covers: safety, components, manuals/data, equipment, processes, and practical experience. A certificate is awarded following successful completion of a written test. The cost will be $75 for all students.
5. NRA’s “Home Firearms Safety”
This is four (4) hour course offered by a NRA certified instructor at Zeeland’s Chick-Owa Sportsman’s Club.
Potential CCW permit students must be able to:
State and demonstrate safe gun handling skills.
Adjust their sights correctly to change the point of bullet impact.
Adequately disassemble their handgun and demonstrate safe cleaning procedures.
And shoot three 5 shot groups that are smaller than nine inches at a distance of 15 feet.
Students will also need to bring a pencil, note paper, handgun, and 100 rounds of ammo; all other class materials as well as food and drinks are provided.
This CCW class is not a class for new or novice handgun shooters. Those interested in a CCW permit, that can not demonstrate basic handgun safety and marksmanship should take the NRA Basic Pistol course first.
